May is Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander American Heritage Month! 

Evanston ASPA is a community-wide initiative working to increase the visibility and representation of the Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander community.  One of the ways we do this is by hosting and highlighting events and activities that center the ASPA community.

 

There are many exciting events and activities planned in celebration of Heritage Month!​ Check out the calendar below!

What's Happening in Evanston this Month?

​

  • Main-Dempster Mile and Downtown Evanston will be highlighting ASPA-owned businesses in their newsletters and websites throughout the month with spotlight interviews on blogs and social media

​

  • May Mart - May Mart is a community initiative to support our local ASPA-owned businesses!  Many will host specials throughout the month of May to promote their business.  Join the May Mart challenge and enter to win a $100 E-Town Gift Card!​

  • Evanston Public Library (EPL) is hosting activities and offering book lists for early childhood and elementary age children centering ASPA stories and storytellers

​​

  • The Umbrella Arts Festival, a celebration of ASPA art and culture will be held on May 14th at Fountain Square in Downtown Evanston

​

  • Kids Create Change will host a lantern-making art activity at the Umbrella Arts Festival on May 14th in Fountain Square

​

  • Kids Create Change and Kitchen Table Stories Project will host a Lantern Floating Ceremony on May 31st at Arrington Lagoon inviting the community to float lit lanterns on the water in honor of all that has been lost during the pandemic

​

  • Kitchen Table Stories Project, Kids Create Change & Artist Book House will host professional development workshops TEAACH-IN this summer in preparation for the TEAACH Act launch

​

  • Kitchen Table Stories Project, Kids Create Change, Artist Book House and the Evanston Art Center are planning a Ghibli Gala, a celebration of Japanese art and anime for summer 2022

​

  • Placemaking Project - Kitchen Table Stories Project & the Evanston History Center are partnering to launch a local ASPA historical archive in preparation for the TEAACH Act launch in Fall 2022

​

  • Additional activities and events will be added to the calendar as planned

In 2021 Evanston's Mayor Stephen Haggerty signed the proclamation of commitment to Evanston ASPA Heritage Month.
